Safer homes are better for everyone
The Crikey Creek Environmental Estate in Quirindi is without doubt the most comprehensive, environmentally sustainable residential development ever undertaken in Australia.
When Cathi Firth, Sustainability Project Manager with NRMA Insurance, heard about it, she immediately thought there was a perfect partnership in the making.
As the insurer of $900 billion in property assets insured across Australia, IAG is focused on reducing the risk of storm damage, burglary and environmental impacts that could contribute to climate change – all of which are linked to an increase in claims.
“It made sense that we become a sponsor of the estate, especially as it meant we could provide input into the design of the exhibition home,” says Cathi.
“We looked at how we could reduce risk by removing open fires, limiting heating and cooling, and ensuring the estate was self supported from a water perspective.”
Crikey Creek is 354kms northwest of Sydney, and has a goal of zero environmental impact. It reflects a quantum leap forward in terms of energy efficiency and water management.
The risk reduction strategies pay off in several ways for future home owners: the homes will be safer and more efficient, and in turn attract lower insurance premiums.
“The estate’s design is unique,” says Dan Musson, Head of Product & Underwriting at NRMA Insurance.
“As a direct result of the steps that will be taken to improve home safety and reduce risk, we will be able to pass on lower premiums to the future home owners in the estate. If we can reduce the possibility of claims happening in the first place, and in turn reduce the cost of premiums, that’s a win-win for everyone.”
